Friends of ANCHOR is a charity that makes cancer care in North-east Scotland the best it can be. ANCHOR stands for Aberdeen and North Centre for Haematology, Oncology and Radiotherapy. The Anchor unit is based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and was opened in 1997. In the last five years, Friends of Anchor has invested £4 million into research, wellbeing and equipment for the anchor unit. Nicol of Skene has chosen Friends of ANCHOR as their charity of choice for 2019. Friends of ANCHOR is a charity very close to many at Nicol of Skene;

“I’m sure we all know someone who has been touched by cancer, whether it be a patient, relative or friend”

-Lynn Nicol, Company Director

Nicol of Skene were the main sponsor of The ANCHOR Wipeout in 2018. As it is such a great day out for such an amazing cause, Nicol of Skene are delighted to be the main sponsor of the ANCHOR Wipeout again in 2019. Everyone taking part had a spectacular time and we encourage everyone to fundraise and get involved;

“The Wipeout last year was brilliant! Everyone who Friends of ANCHOR help, face such difficulties so I think it’s amazing that the charities team put on such a fun, inclusive event that people can literally throw themselves right in to. I was worried about embarrassing myself in front of clients at the Corporate Cup last year because I’m not particularly fit or graceful, but it turns out that it doesn’t matter because nobody is any of those things when trying to climb up a wet and soapy inflatable mountain!"

The event is open to the public on Saturday 17th August 2019 and will feature a day of inflatable obstacles for teams of 6 to 10 people to test themselves and show their competitive side. This also includes The Wee Anchor Wipeout open to kids aged 6-14. The Corporate Cup will be held on Friday 16th August, the day involves businesses competing against one another whilst raising funds for the charity as a company.

“Friends of ANCHOR are a very important charity in the North East of Scotland, unfortunately many lives have been effected by cancer, our staff included. The ANCHOR Wipeout is a fantastic opportunity to have fun and raise money for a worthwhile cause”

Nicol of Skene employees are aiming to raise £10,000 for The Anchored Together campaign through many different fundraising activities - from bake offs to 10km runs.

“Nicol of Skene are really ramping up the fundraising this year with an aim to raise £10k. So, when you see a Nicol’s employee appealing for donations please, please dig deep and help us reach that target! It’s all going to a fantastic cause, one which I’m sure has touched all our hearts whether directly or indirectly. I encourage you all to rally your troops and submit a team for the weekend events – it really is so much fun and what a laugh we had!”

The Anchored Together campaign aims to raise £2 million pounds to bring funds over and above what the NHS can provide for the NEW anchor centre which is scheduled to open in 2021.

Stephanie Nicol, HR Manager at Nicol of Skene was heavily involved with the team at Friends of ANCHOR last year and is delighted that the company can support their cause and encourages people to take part in fundraising for FoA;

"Friends of Anchor is an incredible organisation. Down to its happy, helpful and passionate volunteers, to the inspiring people that have come through the unit. From seeing them strutting their stuff on a catwalk, to throwing themselves through inflatables. Each individual has so clearly benefited from the amazing work that goes on at Friends of ANCHOR. I would definitely recommend everyone, if they get the chance, to pull on a red t-shirt, and become part of the FOA team and raise that well needed funds for such an inspiring charity
